Explore History: Discovering Jessamine Spear Johnson, An Early Photographic Artist of Wyoming & Montana

Join us as we take in the scenery with Discovering Jessamine Spear Johnson, An Early Photographic Artist of Wyoming & Montana – our next Explore History Program.

We’ll be joined via Zoom by Tempe Javitz, the granddaughter of Jessamine Spear, a truly trailblazing figure of Bighorns history.

Since 2007, Tempe Javitz has worked to preserve Jessamine’s 34 boxes of photos, plus diaries and genealogical notes.  Joins us to learn how Tempe conserved and cataloged Jessamine’s photos, while preserving Jessamine’s impressive span of photographic techniques and wide breadth of themes. Using the rich history Tempe inherited, she has written a book about Jessamine’s life and photography to be published by the South Dakota Historical Society Press in late 2022.

You won’t want to miss this what promises to be a picture perfect presentation.

Explore History is a collaboration between The Hub on Smith and Sheridan Community Land Trust.

Explore History programs will be held on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at The Hub on Smith at 10:30 a.m. The Hub invites attendees to join them for lunch after the program’s conclusion.

Explore History has been made possible thanks to the generous support of The NextFifty Initiative.
