SCLT Discovery Session: Coal Seam Fire Hike

SCLT Discovery Session: Coal Seam Fire Hike

Join SCLT’s Recreation Program Manager, Jared Koenig, for a hike to learn about and observe one of the long-burning coal seam fires in our area.

Participants will hike through old mine land while learning about some of the history as well as the lasting effects of some of the oldest coal mines in the area. The hike will reward folks with a front row seat to an active coal seam fire (WHOA HOT!!) with sweeping views of the foothills rolling towards the majestic Bighorn Mountains and the beautiful Tongue River below.

Those who attend will also get to participate in a “Landscape Scavenger Hunt” to find the current landscape along the hike from old photographs of mining and reclamation. The hike will take place at a location that is about a 10-minute drive from the north end of Sheridan. This hike is approximately 3 miles round-trip and will take about 2-2.5 hours. This is a wintertime hike, so appropriate winter clothing is required. Please leave pets at home for this hike. You are welcome to bring snacks or a sack lunch with you.

When: Saturday, January 18 @ 11 a.m. & 2 p.m., and Saturday, February 8 @ 11 a.m. & 2 p.m.
