SCLT Discovery Session: Unearthing Our Past – An Archeological Survey
Sheridan County teems with history. Now, you can help SCLT unearth our past at this one-of-a-kind Discovery Session.
A cursory examination of portions of the SCLT Big Goose Natural Area has revealed artifacts that are believed to have been used by Plains Indian Tribes. You will join a team of qualified archaeologists from Cultural Resource Analysts, Inc., in Sheridan to conduct an archaeological survey of the SCLT Big Goose Natural Area.
By joining us for Unearthing Our Past, you will be actively helping to discover stories of our past today, so that they won’t be lost forever!
When: Saturday, May 17, starting at 9 a.m.
Where: SCLT Big Goose Natural Area, located at 14 Lane Ln, Sheridan.
What to expect: The team from Cultural Resource Analysts will conduct a short educational session where you will learn how to conduct an archaeological survey and see examples of artifacts you may find. Then, you will put those skills to use as the group breaks into teams to survey the entire property. We anticipate that the survey will take 4-6 hours, depending on the number of participants. Many hands make quicker work!
Please stay for as long as you like or are able. Can’t come at 9 a.m.? That’s OK, join us anytime!
What to bring: Please wear comfortable outdoor clothing and sturdy shoes or boots. We recommend dressing in layers and wearing long sleeves and pants. Please bring a water bottle and sun protection. Bug spray may come in handy. We will be working in and around grass, brush, and on uneven ground. Ticks, mosquitoes, and rattlesnakes are all present at the SCLT Big Goose Natural Area. No pets, please.
Snacks and drinks provided but please feel free to bring a sack lunch with you if you would like.
This SCLT Discovery is free to attend and open to all.
