What is a Mountain Bike?

mountain bike is a bicycle designed for off-road cycling.  Mountain bikes typically include a suspension fork, large knobby tires, more durable wheels, more powerful brakes, straight, extra wide handlebars to improve balance and comfort over rough terrain, and wide-ratio gearing optimized for steep climbing or fast descending. Shotgun style bikes are not allowed at this event.

Examples of mountain bikes:

Mountain Bike Brakes

Mountain bikes use a variety of brakes, including cantilever, v-brake, and disc. Modern mountain bikes will use either disc or v-brakes for powerful braking control. Examples:

Tires

There are tons of different bike tires built for all sorts of different kinds of bikes, everything from skinny road racing slicks to big monster truck fat bike tires. Mountain bike tires are much wider than other types of bike tires, with the high volume giving you the maximum grip and a cushier ride. The tread pattern on mountain bike tires is aggressive to give you traction on loose, variable dirt terrain.

Gears and Shifting

Mountain bikes have a wide range of gears for riding in steep and varied terrain. Make sure your bike is in good working condition before going for a ride.

Helmet

Helmets are required. Make sure your helmet is in good condition and fits you properly.
