Historic Preservation Tools for Wyoming offers a broad perspective for preservation opportunities with historic properties, structures, sites, and spaces. In 2022 a feasibility study was commissioned by SCLT and funded by the 1772 Foundation. Hanbury Preservation Consulting provided an overview of a broad range of preservation tools across the United States with the goal of selecting the tools that might work well in Wyoming. The selection process was done with a community survey and community meeting in August 2022. SCLT offers the final report of Historic Preservation Tools for Wyoming to share with Sheridan County and Statewide interest in historic preservation.

Do you, or someone you know, own a historic property you would like to see preserved? One of the best tools to begin with is the National Register of Historic Places: the official list of the Nation’s historic places that are worthy of preservation.

The register began in 1966 after the National Historic Preservation Act was passed. It’s currently overseen by the National Parks Service and now lists more than 90,000 properties.

Although the register is a national list, the process of adding a property typically starts at the state level. SCLT can help navigate the process of nominating a property to be listed.
