Great news for dog lovers! After a successful trial period, the Off-Leash Dog Trail experiment at the SCLT Big Goose Natural Area (BGNA) has officially become a permanent feature. Thanks to responsible use and strong community support, off-leash access within the fenced portion of BGNA will continue for years to come.
A Community Effort That Made a Difference
This decision was made possible because visitors consistently demonstrated good trail etiquette throughout the pilot period. By staying on designated trails, picking up and packing out dog waste, and showing care for the land and other trail users, our community proved that off-leash recreation and responsible stewardship can go hand in hand.
Your efforts truly mattered—and we’re grateful.
“We’re really grateful for how well the community used the space,” said SCLT Director of Recreation Jared Koenig. “People showed that off-leash access can work when everyone does their part, and that gave us the confidence to make it permanent.”

Where Dogs Can Be Off-Leash (and Where They Can’t)
The Hay Field Trails and Cottonwood Trails are Off-Leash Trails. All other areas — including the Oxbow Trails west of the SCLT Office, the Central Trails between the SCLT Office and the Bridges gym, as well as all parking areas and roadways — are On-Leash only.
Keeping Off-Leash Access Open
To keep the Off-Leash Dog Trail open and well-maintained, continued good stewardship is essential. Please remember to:
-
Stay on marked trails
-
Pick up and pack out your dog’s waste
-
Be mindful of wildlife
-
Share the trail respectfully with other visitors
These simple actions help protect the natural area while keeping it enjoyable for all.
“We want this to stay a welcoming and enjoyable place for everyone—dog owners, families, wildlife watchers, and all visitors,” Koenig said. “If people keep doing what they’ve been doing, the Off-Leash Dog Trails will remain a great resource for our community.”
