The 2025 iteration of the Fly Fishing Film Tour will swim into the WYO Theater in downtown Sheridan on Saturday, March 8, courtesy of Fly Shop of the Bighorns.

Attendees will enjoy a fintastic evening featuring fishing films, fun, and fellowship while giving back to the community as all proceeds from ticket sales and raffle prizes will support Sheridan Community Land Trust’s conservation, history, and outdoor recreation missions including helping open a new public fishery at SCLT’s Big Goose Natural Area.

“The Fly Fishing Film Tour isn’t just for avid anglers; it’s a celebration of outdoor recreation and our community,” explained Dakota Webb of Fly Shop of the Bighorns. “We chose to donate all proceeds from the event to SCLT because we love the work they are doing for everyone in Sheridan County.

Webb said the community shares in the excitement for SCLT’s work. He pointed to last year’s film tour selling out the WYO Theater as evidence. He said the fly shop crew is particularly excited to know that funds raised at this year’s Fly Fishing Film Tour will help get anglers on the water close to home as SCLT prepares to open public access for fishing and paddling to a section of stream at the SCLT Big Goose Natural Area this spring.

“Fly Shop of the Bighorns knows how important it is to take care of our home waters, and this a way we can do that,” Webb concluded.

SCLT Executive Director Brad Bauer said a section of Big Goose Creek within the SCLT Big Goose Natural Area will open later this spring to public fishing. Once opened, Bauer noted, anglers will be asked to abide by special rules that should help the stream fish well. That includes “catch and release” and “lure and fly with barbless hooks only.”

The stream section is home to brown and rainbow trout, smallmouth bass, rock bass, and many native non-game fishes like suckers, dace, minnows, and a small type of catfish called Stonecat. SCLT has partnered with Wyoming Game and Fish to install stream temperature loggers that will add to WGDF biologists’ existing network of sensors along Big Goose Creek. The Powder River Basin Chapter of Trout Unlimited also awarded SCLT a $5,000 grant to help SCLT improve stream habitat for all the animals and plants that rely on Big Goose Creek to survive.

“It is exciting to have an opportunity to open a new fishery for our community and do it in a way that fits within SCLT’s mission of promoting outdoor recreation while conserving clear rivers and creeks. We are thankful for the support of great local partners to make a dream like this a reality,” Bauer reflected.

Proceeds will be raised through ticket sales and raffles for great outdoor experiences and gear. They include:

  • 2-person, all-day guided fly fishing in the Bighorns with Seth Carrel & Spear-O-Wigwam
  • GPSMAP 67i GPS Handheld with inReach® Satellite Technology from WYLD Adventures
  • Henry Classic Lever Action Western Style .22 Long Range Rifle and Vortex Diamondback HD 10×42 Binoculars from Rocky Mountain Discount Sports
  • Giant Talon 4 (men’s) or Liv Tempt 4 (women’s) or credit towards a mountain bike of your choice from Sheridan Bicycle Co.
  • Outdoor Adventure Package from The Sport Stop.
  • Lots of great gear from Fly Shop of the Bighorns
  • More items are coming. You must attend to win.

Pete’s Za will also be onsite serving pizza by the slice, with a portion of its sales going to SCLT.

This year’s Fly Fishing Film Tour features an exciting lineup of films that capture the spirit of adventure and perseverance in the world of fly fishing. Highlights include Dan’s epic quest to land the hardest fish in fly fishing, with musky legend Blane Chocklett by his side; a breathtaking adventure fishing for Atlantic Salmon amidst the caribou migration in remote northern waters; a journey through the high desert with guide Matt Mendes on the Deschutes River; the grit and determination of Captain Lacey Kelly, a Florida tarpon guide; April Vokey and Sam Lungren’s exploration of the untamed jungles of Guyana, where they target arapaima, peacock bass, and more.

SCLT Executive Director Brad Bauer said community members help SCLT further care for its “home waters” through conservation programs that help keep water clean, conserve local lands, open space, and wildlife habitat, as well as preserve local history and create new opportunities for people to connect with nature and the outdoors through community trails like the Tongue River Water Trail and educational programs like Discovery Sessions, Unplug, and Explore History.

“We’re excited to take care of our ‘home waters’ by connecting more people to land and history in Sheridan County, and it wouldn’t be possible without the support of folks like Fly Shop of the Bighorns and the people who join us at the Fly Fishing Film Tour on March 8,” Bauer concluded.

“Last year, it sold out, and we had to turn away people at the door. The easiest way to make sure you enjoy a fun night at the WYO and support SCLT’s work is to stop by the Fly Shop of the Bighorns and buy your ticket today,” Webb implored.
