The Sheridan Community Land Trust (SCLT) was recently honored with the Mary Humstone Excellence in Historic Preservation Award, presented by the Alliance for Historic Wyoming during a ceremony held at the Historic Stone House on May 3.
The award recognizes SCLT’s work to place a historic preservation easement on the Historic Stone House (also known locally as Peters House), an important step in ensuring the long-term protection of one of the area’s notable cultural resources. Preservation easements are a key tool in safeguarding historic properties, helping maintain their character and significance for future generations.
“This recognition really speaks to the importance of protecting not just buildings, but the stories and connections they hold,” said Kevin Knapp, SCLT History Program Manager. “The Stone House is a tangible link to the people who shaped this place, and preserving it helps keep that history accessible and relevant.”
SCLT extends deep gratitude to property owner Brian Nix, whose commitment to preserving the Historic Stone House made the easement possible. His strong interest in protecting the home’s historic character was essential to the success of the project. SCLT also recognizes the care shown by previous owners over the past century, whose stewardship ensured the home remained in a condition that made long-term preservation possible.
Knapp emphasized the collaborative nature of the effort. “Projects like this don’t happen in isolation,” he said. “They’re the result of partnerships, community support, and a shared understanding that these places matter.”
The award is part of a statewide program that highlights exemplary efforts in historic preservation across Wyoming. Through efforts like the Historic Stone House easement, SCLT continues to connect people to the land, history, and stories that define Sheridan County, ensuring those connections endure well into the future.
